Dear Parents and Guardians,
Netflix currently has a series entitled “13 Reasons Why.” We wanted to ensure that as parents and guardians you were aware of this series. As a recent York Dispatch article stated, mental health and education professionals have expressed concern after viewing “13 Reasons Why.” According to the National Association of School Psychologists, “We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have any degree of suicidal ideation, watch this series. Its powerful storytelling may lead impressionable viewers to romanticize the choices made by the characters and/or develop revenge fantasies.” The series graphically depicts some horrific events, ultimately ending in a suicide death. It addresses in detail a number of difficult topics, such as bullying, sexual assault, self-harm, drug/alcohol use, and other social issues.
