Huntingdon, PA – February 2015 – The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical “South Pacfic” will be performed on the Huntingdon Area High School stage on April 30, May 1 and May 2, 2015 beginning at 7:00pm with reserved seating. Audiences will be touched with the timeless love story set during WWII in the South Pacific islands. First performed in 1949, “South Pacific” not only brought an endearing tale to the stage but also a strong message about racism in society. American Nurse Nellie Forbush is drawn to a middle-aged Frenchman and plantation owner, Emile de Becque. In a time when America is at war with foreigners, their blossoming relationship is strained as Nellie struggles with the fact that Emile has mixed-race children. A secondary plot tells of a similar struggle as a young U.S. lieutenant encounters a lovely young Tonkinese island girl. Although his hears is drawn to hers, he wrestles with what family and society would think of a mixed marriage. The U.S. Navy Seabees on the island and Bloody Mary, an eccentric island woman, bring laughter and fun to the scenes making “South Pacific” one of the most loved of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.
Many faces from past HAHS musicals will return to the stage this year in “South Pacific”. Taking a lead role once again will be Regional Chorus Qualifier Kate Thurston-Griswold as the beloved Nellie Forbush. Her debonair counterpart Emile de Becque will be played by Erik Krohnemann, also a Regional Chorus Qualifier and State Jazz Band First Chair. All-Eastern Chorus Qualifier Molly Biddle will return to the state to belt out the famous “Bali Hai” as the mystical and fun-loving Bloody Mary. Dashing Lieutenant Cable is played by All-Eastern Chorus Qualifier Aaron Thompson while Regional Chorus Qualifier Chalmers Port portrays the rugged but lovable Luther Billis.
The annual Senior Citizen’s Performance will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 beginning at 9:00am in the high school auditorium. Admission is free for area senior citizens.
